The practical questions the homepage skips
What the sessions are, how often they run and where the limits of the work sit.
The mechanics
One hour, on video, every two or three weeks. Occasionally weekly if something is moving quickly, and occasionally monthly once things have settled, but two to three weeks is the interval that works for most people. It leaves enough time for something to happen between sessions and not so much that the thread is lost.
There is no prepared agenda. You bring whatever is actually occupying you when you sit down, which is often not the thing you had planned to bring. Notes between sessions are yours to keep or not. I keep my own brief record of what we agreed, and nothing else.
We start by agreeing what you want to take away from the conversation, which sounds procedural and turns out to be the part that does most of the work. Then we go looking. I ask questions, I stay with your words rather than my summary of them, and I use whatever helps you see the situation from somewhere other than where you have been standing.
You leave with what you came for. Some conversations end in an action, some in a decision, some in a much clearer view of the thing you have been circling. All three are a good use of an hour.
Thirty minutes, on video, at no cost. You describe what is going on. I ask questions, partly because that is the work and partly because it is the only honest way to find out whether coaching is the right tool for it.
Nothing is committed at that point. By the end we should both be able to say whether there is something worth coaching and whether you want to do it with me, and if the answer to either is no then that is a useful thirty minutes rather than a failed one.
If we both want to carry on, the first proper session is where we agree what you are actually working on and how you would know it had shifted. That conversation is what everything after it is measured against, and it is yours to set rather than mine.
From there most people settle into a run of five or six sessions. That is long enough for what is genuinely in the way to surface, which rarely happens in the first hour, and long enough to see movement against what you named at the start. We look at it together once we get there. Some people stop because the thing they came with has resolved, some carry on for a year, and neither of those says anything about how well it went.
Sessions moved with more than twenty four hours of notice are rescheduled at no cost, as often as you need. Inside twenty four hours, the session is charged, because the hour was held for you and cannot be given to anyone else at that point.
Emergencies are emergencies. I have never charged for one and I do not intend to start.
Confidentiality, and what I refer out
Confidentiality
What you say in a session stays in the session. I do not discuss clients with other clients and I do not use anything identifiable in writing or in talks without asking first and getting a yes in writing.
There are two limits, and they are the standard ones. If I have reason to believe someone is at serious risk of harm, I may need to act on it. If a court requires disclosure, I have to comply. Neither has happened, and you should know both are true before you start.
In an organisational engagement the sponsor pays for the work and does not receive a record of it. What the sponsor gets is themes at the level of the group, agreed with the people being coached, and never a note on an individual.
What I refer out
Coaching is not treatment and I am not a clinician. Where there is depression, anxiety that is interfering with daily functioning, trauma, addiction, an eating disorder or anything else that belongs in clinical care, the right answer is a therapist or a psychiatrist, and I will say so directly rather than working around it.
I also refer out when what is missing is knowledge or a specific skill, or when you need someone who has done the exact thing you are trying to do. Good questions do not substitute for either.
Working with a coach and a therapist at the same time is common and often useful. If you are doing that, it is worth telling both of us.
A written coaching agreement covering scope, confidentiality, payment and cancellation is sent before the first paid session. Nothing in it will be a surprise after reading this page.
A first conversation runs thirty minutes and costs nothing
The purpose is to work out whether there is something worth coaching and whether you want to do it with me. Both answers are allowed to be no.
